Third

To start your research, click on this link to watch a baby chick hatching from the egg. It can sometimes take 2 days for chicks to finally come out of their eggs after they begin to hatch.

Before you move on to the next video, think about where the hatching took place. What is the chick doing during the hatching process? How does the chick look?

Pipping means a chick has cracked its egg for the first time. This video will show you what a pipped egg looks like. Watch the whole video to see it hatch.

Here is a link that will teach you some neat facts about chickens. Remember to write down any facts that you think that will make your report even more amazing!

Chicks grow inside the egg for 21 days. When the chick begins to grow, it is called an embryo. Look at the pictures to see the development of the chick.

When a female chick becomes an adult, she is called a hen. A male adult chicken is called a rooster. Visit this link to learn more about them! Click on "Down On the Farm." Then, click on "Hen House."

Read the story "The Little Red Hen." After you read it, answer this question: Why is this a story and not a report?

Try to complete this puzzle!

Here is a story for you to enjoy called "Chicken Little." Why do you think Chicken Little thought that the sky was falling? Do animals talk in reports?

Other schools have hatched chicks before. Read about a kindergarten class and their journey through chicken hatching!

http://lincoln.midcoast.com/~wps/baston/chicks.htm

After reading the classes journey, think about these questions:

  • How long does it take for a chick to grow inside an egg?
  • Where did the class keep the eggs before they were hatched? Why?
  • Where did the class put the chicks after they were hatched?
  • What is important to remember when handling a chick?
  • Where did the chicks go after Mrs. Baston’s class?

  • These would be great facts to write in your science journal!

Take this short test to see how well you know about chickens!
